*sigh*
does anyone even listen to the classics anymore??? skinnypuppy, christian death, the mission uk, the sisters of mercy, inkubus sukkubus, gene loves jezebel, bahaus, love and rockets, peter murphy, gary numan, etc. if those are too old for you how about some of the neo classics razed in black, switchblade symphony, spahn ranch, bella morte, jack off jill, apoptygma berzerk, etc. you can't make a descent playlist and lable it 'goth' without adding any of these ![]() |

how can there be any real classics already anyway? i mean, when does a band become a classic? after 10 years? way too early...30 years ok...

Pain Metal / Industrial really cool live band, discovered them by accident when they played at some festival Deathstars Industrial / Gothic / Metal don't think I need to tell you about them though For My Pain Rock / Gothic / Metal side project of Tuomas Holopainen from Nightwish Tarot Metal side project of Marco Hietala from Nightwish Down Below Gothic / Pop / Rock discovered them at the festival in 2005, they've changed their style now though, they just recently got some attention when they took part in a music contest on german tv

The only classics I dub as classics are The Rolling Stones, U2, The Byrds, The Moody Blues, Genesis, The Police, Gary Moore, Neil Younge, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Darin, Boston, April Wine, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Yes, Steppenwolf... you get the idea.
Anyway, bands that I recommend: Johnny Hollow (Chamber music with a goth-y atmosphere, lots of cellos) http://www.johnnyhollowmusic.com/indexflash.html Jakalope (Industrial pop founded by Dave Ogilvie; I have to mention them where ever I go because I'm a total Jakafan. ![]() http://www.jakalope.net/ http://www.jakalopefan.com/ (You're prooobably better off going here if you want up to date news on what's going on, since their site hasn't been touched in years and us at Jakafan are getting stuff from Dave whenever he does stuff) The Lollipop People (Modern day vaudville. They do stage shows and normal concerts, with "The Friendly Rich Show" being one of their main attractions. It's really fun times.) http://www.friendlyrich.com/ http://www.myspace.com/friendlyrich The Gothic Archies (They (he, really, since it's only one guy) do the music for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Some of the songs you have to know the books to really understand and have fun with them, but they're really pop-y goth and it's catchy and great.) http://www.houseoftomorrow.com/gothicarchies.php http://www.myspace.com/gothicarchies E.S. Posthumus (Orchestral music. Their first album is more focused on the chorus and the music, and their second has more vocals. It is absolutely gorgeous and the most beautiful music I have ever heard.) http://www.esposthumus.com/ Doe Deere (Really synth-poppy dance stuff, heavy on the 80's influence. She also does some disco stuff.) http://www.doedeere.com/ Aaaand I think that's good for now. |

everyone was posting alt/pop, goth metal, etc, etc. i was refering to classic gothic music (u2 and the stones do not fit anywhere in the list i provided), seeing as how tbm does fit in somewhere in the dark genre (maybe sometimes ebm, maybe sometimes neo-goth, etc).
when do you consider a band to be classic? well, there are many factors to consider, take for instance staying power. when a band can be 20-30 years old and still write music that is relevant today, thats a testament to their staying power. you can also look at pioneerism(? ... did i just make that up?), take for instance david bowie ... not goth, but his androgonistic look has inspired alot of artists and bands in the goth 'scene'. but anyway, i was just putting in my two cents because no one was realy going anything further back than like '97-'00, and there is much more out there than just paramore and greenday (both bands were just thrown in for generalization sheer and suckyness.). |

![]() Here are a few more recommendations. Pop Levi http://www.myspace.com/poplevi pop, rock, kind of retro sounding... well the older stuff anyway Check out "Sugar Assault Me Now," which is the only older song on the Myspace player at the moment. The newer stuff is pretty cool too, but the stuff from the first album is what hooked me. This guy is nuts, and very artistic. Search for "pop levi" on YouTube and you'll find tons of videos starring him (musical and otherwise). Aleixa (previously Sorrow of Seven) http://www.myspace.com/aleixa http://www.myspace.com/honeynuclearwastestoragefacility rock / pop / industrial Make sure you check out the (Sorrow of Seven) cover of "Good Ship Lollipop!" ![]() I run both of those profiles with the band founder's permission... well, I only run one because I locked myself out of the first profile! Unfortunately they're no longer making music, and only released a few demos, a handful of b-sides, and two albums. The band members are (or were) Christians... although some of the songs reflect that, a lot are just about life in general or whatever they wanted to write about. I wouldn't even mention this, but I know for some people it can be a turn-off.

I can see what you mean... I just don't really consider all the gothy, dark stuff to be classic yet. I generally go by how long it takes for cars to become a classic, which is usually 20-30 years... but that's just me. I guess that makes stuff from the 80's close to being classic, but CR Q. 107 in Toronto has been dubbing stuff from the 80's as "classic rock" for a few years now. The problem with bands and staying power these days is that attention spans are so short. The 90's was really a time of one hit wonders and bands who got together for a couple of years, then disbanded, all in the mainstream. And people are always looking for that new "star" singer or really awesome band, so it's harder and harder to stay in the industry for long amounts of time. |
