Imogen's an ingenious musician and very ambitious when it comes to detail, I can appreciate that (there's no doubting her talent and originality) but I think it might take Sparks a long while to fully work its magic on me.
Right now I find myself dipping into tracks rather than repeating the album over and over (although I have listened to it in its entirety a few times now.) It's almost as if the little technicalities and sudden gear-shifts that make certain seconds sound so special, have also overshadowed the overall immediacy and feel of the album... Heap's very [dare I say it] "quirky" and I think I'd just like to hear more of those idiosyncrasies on a louder and more personal level, rather than burying them all in the intricate programming and unconventional production choices. Strip it back just a teeny bit to give me a little more...Heap, perhaps? For example, Me the Machine, Run-Time or The Listening Chair (the latter I didn't like at all at first but now love the concept behind it and think it's one of the more memorable songs on the album!) I don't know, I'm probably talking out of my arse... I'm still really pleased she took such an adventurous and experimental route with the record, as that was always the type of artist we knew she'd grow to become. Those meticulous details make Sparks a great achievement whatever I think - you can tell how much she's pushed herself and it's exciting. I obviously need to keep listening 'til it clicks with me as a whole rather than what I think could have probably been 2 different EPs. The difference when I put my headphones on at night and listen to The Birthday Massacre is that I know I'm going on a sonic journey, not just getting a fix. I sort of set that as the bar for all musicians now. |

Well... hmm. I like how Immi's trips into India and Nepal and China have so obviously affected the music, and it's giving me some very nice flashbacks to her work with Acacia. It's a very strange album though, in that most of the songs don't seem connected at all, more like a compilation than anything else. It's by no means bad, but nothing like her other albums. I'm liking it so far, though.

I was wondering if there were any Immi fans on board.
She is a special case for me. Some things about her music I hate, other things I love, but at the end of the day, I have a weird sort of crush on her and appreciate her existence very much. Sparks was a major step-up from Ellipse imo, less monotonous and more inspired. Mind's Without Fear was my personal favorite. It seems everyone who travels throughout the India/Nepal/Bhutan takes a lot of the soul back with them. I like where she is going. Last album purchased was Modest Mouse's The Moon and Anarctica. I just recently ordered SUPERSTITION. I hadn't heard any of the new songs until I heard 'Beyond' on Youtube and that song alone sold me. So I am eagerly waiting for that cd to arrive. In the meantime, the most previous album I bought and have been listening to is HYMNS FOR THE BROKEN by Evergrey. Man, is that a great progressive metal album!

Chandeen - 'Forever and Ever'. So dreamy~!
Autumn's Grey Solace - 'Monajjfyllen'. Listening to it is like swimming in clear blue seas above colorful coral reefs. It's gorgeous. ![]()

I don't buy CDs unless they're by TBM because it depends on the song and not the artist. I did download some songs on iTunes though.
